Professional Headshots for Medical Students: ERAS, VSLO & More

A photo request tends to show up at an awkward moment. A rotation coordinator wants a profile image. A school directory needs updating. Then ERAS opens, and you realize you need professional headshots for medical students that can work in more than one place.

Here is the part most students miss: ERAS, VSLO, school profiles, and LinkedIn do not all follow the same rules.

Why Medical Students Need Professional Headshots

Somewhere between the first white coat ceremony and the first day of residency, you stop being a student and start being a colleague. People you have never met begin forming an impression of you before you ever speak.

After more than 30 years behind the camera (you can read more about Alex Kaplan), I have seen how much a calm, clear photo does in those moments. Medical student headshots are usually requested in a rush, one platform at a time. A portrait made with the whole journey in mind saves you from that scramble.

The same portrait can anchor a LinkedIn profile, a department page, or a speaker bio. Our guide on why the right LinkedIn headshot builds trust shows how much that first image carries. To see the kind of portrait work I do for professionals, browse our headshots page.

ERAS Headshots for Residency Applications

ERAS is the use case most students think of first, so here is the short version. The AAMC says the ERAS photo is most often used by programs to help identify you when you report for an interview. It also tells applicants to research programs individually and verify their requirements.

The current AAMC ERAS photo guidance lists three technical points: JPG/JPEG or PNG, a maximum file size of 150 KB, and a face that is centered in the photo. Anything beyond that, such as lighting or background, is a photographic choice, not an AAMC rule.

For the full walkthrough on wardrobe, common mistakes, and how sessions work, see our ERAS headshots in New Jersey guide.

What Makes Professional Headshots for Medical Students ERAS Ready

A file under 150 KB with a centered face will upload, but it will not make you look like yourself. Medical residency headshots work best when the first impression is clear: relaxed eyes, a natural smile, and enough light that your face still reads at a small size.

One more AAMC detail is worth knowing. You assign your photo to programs yourself, and once it is assigned to a program you have applied to, it cannot be unassigned. Choose the image you are happy with before you assign it.

What Is VSLO?

VSLO stands for Visiting Student Learning Opportunities. It is an AAMC program that lets medical and public health students pursue short-term learning opportunities away from their home institution.

Those can include clinical rotations, away electives, observerships, and research. The official AAMC VSLO resource explains how the program works and which opportunities are available.

Do You Need a Professional Headshot for VSLO?

Not automatically, and not in the same way as ERAS. Requirements can vary by host institution and opportunity. Check the specific requirements for each opportunity, and do not assume the ERAS photo rules apply to VSLO.

That distinction matters. A student who reads the instructions for every host site avoids last-minute surprises. A student who assumes one rule fits everything can end up redoing an image the night before a deadline.

If a host institution does ask for a photo, a polished portrait already on hand makes that request easy instead of stressful.

Can You Use One Professional Headshot for Multiple Purposes?

Often, yes, as long as each destination allows it. A single strong portrait can serve ERAS, a school or institutional profile, LinkedIn, networking, and a professional bio. Where permitted, it may also work for VSLO-related or institution-specific uses.

Medical school headshots for a class directory or student profile may have their own format, so check before you submit. That is also why professional photos for medical students work best as a small set rather than one file: a classic expression, a warmer smile, perhaps a different top.

Think of it as an image library. Later, the same portraits can carry you into a hospital staff page, a physician directory, or a fellowship application, so you are not starting over in residency.

What Should You Wear for a Medical Student Headshot?

Keep it professional, clean, and simple. The AAMC photo guidance I reviewed lists file type, file size, and a centered face. It does not prescribe clothing, so the goal is to look like a credible colleague.

A dark blazer over a solid, well-fitted top works nearly every time. Choose colors that sit comfortably against your skin tone, and skip busy patterns, large logos, or anything that pulls the eye away from your face.

Keep jewelry small and quiet. If you wear glasses, bring them, and tell your photographer so the lighting can be set to keep reflections out of your eyes. Press everything the day before, because wrinkles show up more than people expect.

What Should a Medical Student Headshot Look Like?

Think “someone I would trust with a question.” That means a natural expression, soft and even lighting, and a background that stays out of the way.

Framing matters too. A head-and-shoulders crop with your face centered keeps you ERAS friendly and still works on LinkedIn or a department page.

Professionalism and approachability are not opposites. The best portraits show both: a steady look, a relaxed jaw, and a smile that reaches your eyes.

When Should You Schedule Your Headshot?

I will not give you a universal date, because application timelines differ by program and institution. Check current requirements for each one you are targeting.

What I can tell you is to leave room. You need time for the session, time to choose your favorites, and time for retouching and file preparation. Booking early removes the rush, and a calm student photographs better than a rushed one.
