Child Actor Headshots Checklist: What Parents Should Prepare

Most parents booking child actor headshots for the first time are quietly worried about the same thing, and it is not the photographs. It is their kid.

Will she freeze? Will he do the stiff grin he does for grandma? Am I supposed to teach him something before we walk in?

You are not. The parts that feel like they need coaching are exactly the parts you should leave alone.

I have spent more than 30 years behind a camera, a good stretch of that photographing kids at my studio in New Milford. This is the checklist I give parents before they come in.

Before You Book: Know What the Headshots Are For

Ask who is going to receive these images. An agent submitting to New York casting has different requirements than a parent self-submitting to regional theater, and the answer changes how many looks you need.

If your child is already signed, email the agent before booking. Most have a preference on format and on whether they want commercial and theatrical looks separated.

One more question worth answering honestly: how much has your child changed in the last six months. Children age out of their headshots faster than adults do, and a photograph that no longer matches the kid in the room works against you.

One Week Before the Headshot Session

This is where most of the useful child actor headshot preparation happens, and almost none of it involves acting.

Haircuts go two weeks out, not two days. A fresh cut reads as a fresh cut, and there is no softening that in retouching.

Do not start new skincare, new products, or anything else new on a face in the week before a session. Reactions show up on camera and they are not always fixable. Sleep matters more than anything you can buy.

Wash and check the clothes now, while there is still time to swap something. Wrinkles, pilling, a stain you did not notice in the drawer: all easier to catch on a Tuesday than in my studio.

What Clothes Should Your Child Bring?

Bring three or four tops in solid colors, fitted but comfortable, with no logos, no slogans, and no busy patterns. Jewel tones and mid-range colors photograph well on almost every child. Skip pure white, neon, and anything your child has been talked into wearing.

Comfort is the real selection criterion. A shirt that itches will show up in a child’s shoulders long before it shows up in their face.

Layers earn their place. A plain tee with an open shirt over it gives you two looks in one outfit change, which matters when you have a limited window before a young child is finished for the day.

Hair, Skin, Glasses and Accessories

Natural is not a style choice here. It is the whole point.

Hair should look the way it looks on a normal Saturday. A style your child has never worn before reads as a costume, and casting notices the mismatch when she walks into the room.

Glasses come if your child wears glasses daily. Bring them clean, and bring the cloth. I would rather work around a reflection than photograph a child who does not look like herself.

Braces stay in the photograph. So do freckles, so does a missing tooth. Those are casting details, not flaws, and hiding them just means someone is surprised at the audition. No makeup on children, and a little lip balm is the whole kit.

What to Bring on Headshot Day

Pack the night before. The morning of a session is not the time to be hunting for a hairbrush.

Bring the outfits on hangers rather than folded in a bag, a brush and any hair ties, unscented wipes, water, and a snack that will not end up on a collar. If your child uses an inhaler or a comfort item on a normal day out, that comes too.

Bring one adult. A grandparent, a sibling and a family friend in the room turns a headshot session into a performance with an audience, which is the opposite of what we are trying to photograph.

Leave more time than you think you need for the drive. A child who arrives rushed takes twenty minutes to come back down, and that is twenty minutes of the session gone.

How to Prepare Your Child Without Over-Coaching

Tell your child what is going to happen and then stop. “We are going to a photographer, he is going to talk to you, you will change your shirt a couple of times, and then we will get lunch” is the entire briefing.

Do not rehearse smiles at home. A practiced smile is the single most common thing I have to work a child out of, and children who have been coached arrive already performing.

Do not tell them this is important. Do not tell them to be good. Both land on a seven year old as pressure, and pressure shows up in the eyes immediately.

I do not ask children to smile. I get them talking and photograph what happens on the way to an answer. The first ten minutes of a kids acting headshots session are almost never the ten minutes I use, and I plan for that.

Your job during the session is smaller than you think. Stay in the room, stay out of your child’s eyeline, and resist the urge to direct from behind me. When a parent calls out “smile for the man,” I lose the expression I was two seconds away from.

What Headshots Should You Select After the Session?

Pick the photograph that looks most like your child on an ordinary day. Not the prettiest frame, the one where a stranger would recognize her walking down the street.

If your child has an agent, send the agent your shortlist and let them make the final call. They know what their submissions need better than either of us does.

Most young performers need one to two images to start. Teens with more range can justify a commercial look and a theatrical look, but a six year old does not have two looks. She has a face.

Retouching stays light. Over-retouched kids headshots for auditions fail the moment the real child walks into the room, and casting remembers that.
