Iām Alex Kaplan, a Headshot Photographer and videographer based in New Milford, NJ, serving Northern.

If you’ve been scrolling through LinkedIn lately, you might’ve noticed something: the best corporate headshots in New Jersey don’t look like they were shot in a studio anymore.
They’re not standing in front of gray muslin or those mottled, dated backdrops you still see everywhere. They’re shot in real environments- offices, lobbies, conference rooms- places that actually say something about who they are.
And there’s a reason for that.
Here’s the thing about traditional backdrop headshots: they’re safe.
They’re clean, they’re predictable, and they’ll absolutely work if all you need is a face on a website. But they also feel… distant. Like you’re looking at someone who showed up, stood still for 90 seconds, and left.
Modern professionals- especially executives and business owners- are realizing that their headshot is doing more heavy lifting than ever before.
It’s not just sitting on an “About Us” page. It’s on LinkedIn, on conference speaker lists, on pitch decks, on Google searches. It’s often the first impression someone gets before they even read your bio.
And when someone’s deciding whether to reach out, hire you, or trust you with their business? That backdrop isn’t doing you any favors.
An environmental portrait is just a headshot taken in a real location- your office, your workspace, somewhere that gives context to who you are and what you do.
Instead of isolating you against a blank wall, it puts you in your world.
The image here is a perfect example. This was shot in a modern office with glass walls and natural light. The background isn’t competing with the subject- it’s soft, clean, intentional. But it says something.
It says professional, it says modern, it says this person works in a real place with real people.
And more importantly? It feels approachable.
The expression is confident but relaxed. The posture is natural. There’s no stiffness, no “stand here and smile” awkwardness. It’s the kind of image that makes someone think, “Yeah, I could work with this person.”
Part of it is visual literacy. We’re all looking at thousands of images a day, and we’ve gotten pretty good at spotting what feels authentic versus what feels staged.
Traditional backdrop shots increasingly read as… dated. Like stock photography.
But the bigger reason is that executive headshots in NJ (and everywhere else) are being used differently now. They’re not just internal directory photos. They’re marketing tools.
And marketing works better when it feels human.
Think about it: would you rather see someone frozen against gray cloth, or someone in their actual element, doing what they do?
The second one tells a story. It builds trust. It gives you a sense of who this person is, not just what they look like.
Not every office background is going to work, and not every location is going to read well on camera.
Here’s what I look for when I’m shooting professional headshots in Northern NJ for clients:
Clean lines. You want backgrounds that complement, not distract. Glass walls, bookshelves, soft-focus office spaces- these work because they add context without pulling focus.
Natural light. Whenever possible, I’m using window light or ambient office lighting. It’s flattering, it’s real, and it doesn’t look like someone set up a studio in the middle of your break room.
Authenticity. The best environmental portraits happen when people feel comfortable in the space. If you’re a lawyer, we’re shooting in your office or conference room. If you’re a startup founder, maybe it’s your workspace or a modern lobby. The location should make sense for you.
If you’re wondering where to shoot, here are spots that consistently work well:
The key is keeping it simple. The environment should support you, not compete with you.
Look, I’m not saying backdrops are dead. There are absolutely situations where they make sense:
Large team consistency. If you’re photographing 50 people for a company directory and need everyone to match, a neutral backdrop keeps it uniform.
Limited time or space. Sometimes you’ve got 10 minutes in a conference room with terrible lighting. A portable backdrop and clean lighting setup can save the day.
Specific branding requirements. Some companies have strict visual guidelines that require consistent backgrounds across all materials.
You just prefer it. Some people genuinely like the classic, timeless look of a clean backdrop. And that’s totally fine.
The point isn’t that backdrops are wrong. It’s that you have options now, and for most modern professionals, an environmental approach is going to serve you better.
I’ve been shooting corporate headshots in New Jersey and NYC for over 30 years, and I’ve learned that most people aren’t comfortable being photographed.
That’s normal.
So my job is to make this as painless as possible. I’ll show up, assess your space in about 90 seconds, find the best light, and direct you calmly through the process. Most people get a natural expression in about three minutes once they relax.
We’ll shoot a few different angles, a few different expressions, and you’ll have options.
If you want both a clean backdrop and an environmental option? We can do both in one session. Takes maybe 15 minutes total.
And if you need a few short video clips for LinkedIn or your website- quick intros, testimonials, whatever- we can capture that at the same time. A lot of clients are realizing that moving content performs better than stills, so we’re set up to handle both.
Turnaround is fast. Proofs within 48 hours, finals within a week.
If you’re getting executive headshots in New Jersey done, you’ve got options.
You can absolutely go the traditional route- backdrop, studio lighting, done in 15 minutes. And for some situations, that’s still the right call.
But if you want something that actually works in the way people consume images today? Something that builds trust and feels like a real introduction?
Environmental portraits are where it’s at.
I’ve watched this shift happen in real time. The clients who are getting the most traction- the ones whose images actually convert- are the ones embracing this approach.
They’re not trying to look like everyone else. They’re showing up as themselves, in their world, and letting that speak for them.
If you’re looking for professional headshots in Northern NJ or NYC that feel current and trustworthy, we’ll shoot in a space that fits your role, keep the process simple, and get you options fast.
And honestly? That’s always been the goal.
