I’m Alex Kaplan, a Headshot Photographer and videographer based in New Milford, NJ, serving Northern.
You’ve worked hard to get here. Now your dental school application headshot needs to match that effort.
It’s one of the few parts of your application you have complete control over- and it shapes your first impression before any interview, before any committee conversation, before anyone reads a single word of your personal statement.
A clean, professional image tells reviewers you take this seriously. It projects maturity, confidence, and the kind of readiness that belongs in a clinical setting.
If you’re searching for dental school application headshots in Northern New Jersey or the NYC metro area, this guide covers everything you need to know before you book.
Dental school applications are competitive. Your GPA, DAT score, and letters of recommendation all carry weight. So does your photo- even if it feels like a small detail.
Think about it from the committee’s perspective. They’re reviewing hundreds of applications. A polished, warm, professional headshot helps your file feel complete. It makes you look like someone who already belongs in a clinical setting.
A poor photo- blurry, casually shot on a phone, or just awkward- can subtly undermine everything else you’ve built. It’s not the deciding factor, but it’s never worth leaving it to chance when it’s this easy to get right.
Your dental school headshot should communicate three things: professionalism, approachability, and confidence.
Patients need to trust their dentists. Admissions committees know this. They want to see that you can project calm authority without looking stiff or intimidating. A genuine expression, good posture, and clean professional attire go a long way toward making that statement before you say a single word.
You don’t need to look perfect. You need to look like yourself- at your best.
Quick Requirements Checklist
- ✅ Plain white, off-white, or light gray background
- ✅ Head-and-shoulders framing, eyes near upper third
- ✅ Portrait (upright) orientation
- ✅ Even, shadow-free lighting
- ✅ JPG/JPEG format (sometimes PNG accepted)
- ✅ File size: varies by portal – always confirm before uploading
- ✅ Neat, professional attire
Requirements vary by school and application system, so always confirm the upload specs for every program before you submit. That said, most dental application photos follow the same pattern: a plain, light background, passport-style head-and-shoulders framing, and a simple file format.
One thing applicants frequently get wrong is file size. Online portals often want small uploads- not large high-resolution files. TMDSAS, for example, requires photo files smaller than 100KB. Other portals use different limits entirely. And not every program collects a photo in the primary application- some request a head-and-shoulders headshot later, during supplementals, ID verification, or interview scheduling. Either way, it’s worth being prepared before those stages arrive rather than scrambling for a photo at the last minute.
General standards most programs accept:
When you book, tell me where you’re applying. I’ll export portal-sized versions sized to your upload limits, plus a full-resolution file for future use- so you’re not resizing images yourself the night before a deadline.
Keep it simple and professional. Here’s what works:
Fit matters too. Clothes that look sharp in person can look sloppy on camera. Make sure your outfit is pressed, well-fitted, and clean before you walk in the door.
Your photo will be used across multiple applications and could stay in your file for years. A few things worth thinking about ahead of time:
I keep headshot sessions efficient and low-pressure. Most run 20–30 minutes for a single subject. Here’s what to expect when you come to my New Milford, NJ studio:
If you’ve never liked how you look in photos, you’re not alone- it’s the most common thing I hear before a session, and it’s also what clients are most surprised about once we’re done. For a sense of what natural, professional results look like, check out this example of a professional headshot from a recent session.
Visit my professional headshots page to see the full range of what I offer for individual sessions.
After your session, I’ll send you a private online gallery, typically within 48–72 hours. You’ll review every image, choose your favorites, and download your finished files directly- no back-and-forth required.
Final retouched images are delivered as high-resolution JPEGs within 3–5 business days of your selection. Portal-sized versions are included, already formatted to common upload limits, so you can submit without any extra editing on your end. And if you want to record a short vertical intro clip for LinkedIn or an interview portal during the same visit, I offer a simple video add-on- same session, no second trip.
Every image I deliver is retouched- but always naturally. That means:
I don’t alter bone structure, slim faces, or add effects that make you look like a different person. You’re applying to dental school. They’re going to meet you in an interview. Your photo should look like you.

The portraits below show the clean, professional style that application portals expect- neutral background, head-and-shoulders framing, even lighting, and an expression that reads as both confident and approachable. This is the standard to aim for.

Not always in the primary application- requirements vary by system. But many schools request a head-and-shoulders photo during supplementals, interview scheduling, or ID verification. Having a polished, portal-ready headshot prepared before those stages means one less thing to scramble for when deadlines get close.
Probably not. Most dental school portals require specific pixel dimensions, file sizes, and background standards that a LinkedIn photo won’t meet. Even if it passes the technical check, a LinkedIn headshot is typically composed and cropped for a different purpose. A dedicated session is worth the extra step.
Most programs ask for white or neutral gray. Some accept off-white or other light, neutral backgrounds. Always verify each program’s exact specifications. At my studio I can shoot against multiple background options so you have the flexibility to meet different portal requirements with a single session.
Yes- but keep it natural and relaxed, not a forced grin. Admissions committees want to see warmth and approachability. Think of the expression you’d use when greeting a patient for the first time: confident, calm, and genuinely friendly.
At minimum, book 2–3 weeks before your application deadline. That gives you time for the session, retouching, file delivery, and downloading without any last-minute pressure. If you’re applying early in the cycle, earlier is always better.
