Corporate Headshot Photographer in New Jersey: What to Wear and What to Expect

Most people do not think about their headshot until they absolutely have to. A promotion comes through, a conference bio is due, a new LinkedIn profile is getting built, and suddenly there is urgency around something that has been sitting on the back burner for two years.

If you have been in that spot, you are not alone. An attorney I worked with recently had been using the same outdated headshot for eight years. Within a week of updating it, he told me three people had reached out on LinkedIn who had never engaged with his profile before.

As a corporate headshot photographer in New Jersey with more than 30 years of experience, I have worked with executives, attorneys, physicians, and professionals at every stage of their careers. The one thing they all have in common is that they want it done right.

This post covers what to wear, what to expect from the session, and why your headshot is doing more work for you than you probably realize.

Why Your Headshot Matters More Than You Think

Before we get into logistics, it helps to understand what a headshot is actually communicating. People form impressions in under a second when they see a photo. That is not an exaggeration. Recruiters, potential clients, event organizers, and colleagues are all making quick judgments before they ever read a word of your bio.

A strong headshot signals that you take yourself seriously. It conveys confidence without arrogance. It makes you look approachable and competent at the same time. A weak one, usually an old photo, a casual snapshot, or something clearly taken in poor light, sends the opposite message, whether you intend it to or not.

If your headshot is more than two or three years old, or if it no longer looks like you, it is time for an update.

What to Wear for a Corporate Headshot Session

This is the question I get most often, and the answer is simpler than most people expect.

Stick with solid colors. Busy patterns, bold stripes, and logos all pull focus away from your face. The goal is for the viewer to notice you, not your shirt.

Dress one level above your day-to-day. If you typically wear business casual, wear a blazer. If you regularly wear a suit, wear your best one. The idea is to look polished without looking like you are in costume.

Bring options. Most clients bring two or three outfits to the session. That gives you variety across the final images and lets you choose what works best for different contexts. LinkedIn may call for something slightly different than a speaking bio or a law firm website.

Pay attention to necklines and collars. Crew necks, button-downs, and blazers all tend to photograph well. Very low necklines or anything overly casual will undercut an otherwise great image.

Colors that work well: Navy, charcoal, deep burgundy, forest green, and classic white or light gray. Colors to avoid in most cases: neon, very pale yellow, or anything close to your skin tone that can wash you out.

If you are in finance or law, darker solids- navy, charcoal, deep gray- tend to read as authoritative and polished. If you work in a more creative or client-facing field, you have a little more room to bring in color. Burgundy, forest green, and even certain shades of blue can add personality without losing professionalism.

The image above is a good example of this in practice. Navy suit, white shirt, striped tie with coordinating tones, neutral gray background. Everything in the frame is working together, and none of it is competing with the subject.

What Happens During the Session

A well-run headshot session should feel calm, not rushed. When clients come into my studio in the Hackensack area, we start with a short conversation. Not small talk, but an actual discussion about how you use your headshot, where it will live, and what impression you want to make. That context shapes everything from the lighting setup to the direction during the shoot itself.

From there, it is about coaching. Most people are not comfortable in front of a camera, and that is completely normal. My job is to get you to a place where you feel natural and relaxed so the images reflect who you actually are, not a stiff, over-posed version of you. That usually happens pretty quickly once we start talking and moving- by the time we are ten minutes in, most clients have forgotten they were nervous walking through the door.

Sessions typically run about an hour for individual clients. If you are booking a team or multiple executives from one company, we build the schedule accordingly. The turnaround for proofs is usually 48 hours, and final images are delivered within a week.

If you want to see an example of professional headshot work before booking, that is a good place to start.

Frequently Asked Questions About Corporate Headshots in NJ

How much does a corporate headshot photographer in New Jersey typically charge?

Rates vary depending on the photographer, the location, and what is included. Basic sessions can start around $150 to $200 but often include limited images with minimal editing. Experienced photographers with professional studio setups and a strong portfolio typically charge more, and that investment reflects in the quality of the final product. When you factor in how long a great headshot stays in circulation, the cost per use is actually quite low.

How do I prepare for my headshot session?

Get a good night of sleep. Bring two or three outfit options. If you wear glasses, decide in advance whether you want them in the photos. Grooming appointments, haircuts, beard trims, or any other prep work, should ideally happen one to two days before the shoot, not the day of. And give yourself time to get there without rushing. Being stressed walking in makes the first several frames harder to use.

Can I get headshots for my whole team or law firm?

Absolutely. Team and group sessions are a significant part of what I do. We can come to your office or shoot in the studio depending on what works best for your space and schedule. Consistency across the team, same background, same lighting treatment, same quality is something clients appreciate when they see the final results side by side.

How often should I update my corporate headshot?

A good rule of thumb is every two to three years, or sooner if something significant changes. A new role, a major change in your appearance, a rebrand of your firm, or a shift in how you want to be positioned professionally- any of those are good reasons to refresh. If you have gone through a significant change in how you look- a new hairstyle, weight loss, or simply the natural difference a few years makes- your current photo may no longer represent you accurately. The goal is for someone who meets you in person to recognize you from your photo. If there is a noticeable gap, that is a signal it is time.
