5 Best Headshot Locations in Bergen County NJ for Professional Results

If you’ve ever tried to figure out where to take professional headshots in Bergen County, you already know the question spirals fast. Studio or outdoor? Neutral background or something with character? Somewhere private or a public spot you have to share with dog walkers and weekend picnics?

After 30 years and more than 15,000 sessions across Northern New Jersey and the NYC metro area, I’ve worked in nearly every setting this county has to offer. Some locations look incredible in person and fall completely flat on camera. The five spots below are the ones that actually show up.

1. A Dedicated Headshot Studio

Before we talk about outdoor locations, this one needs to be on the list because it gets overlooked in conversations about variety.

A studio gives you total control. Lighting doesn’t shift because clouds rolled in. The background doesn’t change because a maintenance crew showed up. You can shoot morning, afternoon, or evening and the results are consistent.

For corporate headshots that need to live on a law firm website, a LinkedIn profile, or a company’s executive team page, studio images often perform better than outdoor ones. The clean separation between subject and background keeps the focus exactly where it belongs: on the person.

My studio in the Teaneck area is set up specifically for this kind of work. The lighting rigs, the backdrop options, the whole workflow is built around getting polished, usable images efficiently, whether you’re coming in for a solo session or bringing a full team.

What it’s best for: Executive headshots, law firm portraits, LinkedIn profiles, financial services, any situation where a clean neutral look is the goal.

2. Overpeck County Park (Leonia / Teaneck Area)

Overpeck is one of the most underrated outdoor headshot locations in Bergen County, and it never gets mentioned in the same breath as the more photographed spots because it doesn’t have a dramatic architectural centerpiece. What it does have is variety.

You’ve got open grass areas that create a soft, blurred green background when you use the right focal length and working distance. You’ve got tree lines that filter light beautifully in the morning before the sun gets overhead. You’ve got walking paths that feel natural and lived-in, which matters when someone is uncomfortable in front of a camera and you want them moving rather than standing stiff against a wall.

The park’s scale also means you’re not competing for space with ten other photographers. You can move around, try different angles, change the whole mood of the session without getting in a car and driving to another location.

What it’s best for: Personal branding sessions, approachable and natural-looking professional headshots, anyone who wants a warmer outdoor feel without looking overly posed.

Timing note: Shoot within the first two hours after sunrise or the hour before sunset. Midday light at Overpeck is harsh and unflattering, just like everywhere else.

3. Downtown Ridgewood

Ridgewood’s main commercial strip is one of the best places for photos in NJ when you want architectural interest without going full urban grit. The brick storefronts, the mature street trees, the mix of warm and neutral tones in the buildings themselves, it all creates a backdrop that reads as polished but not sterile.

For personal branding photography especially, downtown Ridgewood photographs beautifully. The textures give the image depth without competing with the subject. Ridgewood also stays relatively quiet on weekday mornings, which makes it more workable than a lot of outdoor locations in this county.

One thing worth noting: this is a real commercial district, not a photo-friendly park. You’re working around foot traffic, delivery vehicles, and the occasional business owner who wants to know what you’re doing in front of their storefront. None of that is a dealbreaker, but it’s part of managing the session well.

What it’s best for: Personal branding, creative professionals, real estate agents, entrepreneurs, anyone whose brand is warm and community-facing rather than strictly corporate.

4. Palisades Area / Fort Lee

If you want an outdoor headshot location in Bergen County that has some visual punch, the Palisades area delivers in a way that’s hard to match anywhere else in the county. The combination of tree cover, natural light filtering through a dense canopy, and the occasional dramatic river view gives you images that look like they belong in a magazine spread.

The tradeoff is accessibility. Some of the best spots in this area require a short hike to reach, and you’re working around other visitors, especially on weekends. On a Tuesday morning though, you can have stretches of this landscape almost entirely to yourself.

I’ve watched this play out in hundreds of sessions: when the background has real character, the subject relaxes into the environment instead of performing for a camera. The Palisades does that work. For outdoor headshots in NJ that need to stand out on a portfolio site or a social feed, this is one of the first places I’d point someone. According to research on professional first impressions, photos that feel authentic and contextually grounded build trust faster than polished but sterile ones. The scenery here earns that.

What it’s best for: Creative professionals, actors, anyone who wants a dramatic outdoor look, personal branding sessions where visual differentiation is part of the goal.

5. Your Own Office or Workplace

This one surprises people, but it’s consistently the location choice that makes the most sense for a specific client type.

If you’re a financial advisor, an attorney, a doctor, or a business owner with a professional office space, shooting on-location where you actually work does something that no park or studio backdrop can fully replicate. It places you in context. When someone lands on your website and sees you in your own environment, sitting across from your desk or standing in front of the space where you actually meet clients, there’s an immediate believability to it.

These are called environmental portraits, and they work best when the space itself communicates something about who you are and how you work. Not every office qualifies. Cramped, cluttered, or badly lit spaces fight against you. But when the environment is right, the results are among the strongest headshots I produce.

I photograph in offices throughout Bergen County regularly, including Hackensack, Paramus, Fort Lee, and surrounding towns. Learn more about the full range of services here.

What it’s best for: Financial advisors, attorneys, executives, medical professionals, anyone whose authority is tied to their professional environment.
