Behind the Lens: A Model’s Debut Portfolio Shoot at Verona Park

October 8, 2024

Introduction
The creation of a model’s portfolio is pivotal in launching their career in the modeling industry. Recently, I had the opportunity to help an aspiring model take her first step into this world with a focused, one-hour photoshoot at the scenic Verona Park in Verona, New Jersey. Our goal was to capture a set of compelling images that could serve as the foundation of her professional portfolio.

Pre-Shoot Preparation
For a portfolio shoot, every detail counts. We decided on a single, versatile outfit that would lend an elegant yet accessible look, suitable for both commercial and high-fashion sectors. The choice of Verona Park as our location was driven by its diverse backdrops—from lush greenery to charming water views—all within a compact area ideal for a short session.

The Shoot
With just an hour to shoot, efficiency was key. We began by exploring the park to find the perfect spots that provided flattering natural light and interesting compositions. I shot with a Sony a1 camera paired with a Sony 70-200mm v2 G Master lens, a combination ideal for its sharpness and beautiful bokeh, which helps in isolating the model from any distracting backgrounds.

The session was dynamic, with the model quickly adapting to each directed pose. We focused on capturing a variety of expressions and angles to showcase her adaptability and the nuances of her personality. The shoot wasn’t just about getting the right shots but also about ensuring the model felt confident and comfortable, which came through naturally in the final images.

Post-Shoot Process
Choosing the final images was a process of identifying those that best represented the model’s potential and versatility. The editing was done in Adobe Lightroom, where I fine-tuned the exposure and color grading to enhance the natural beauty of the setting and the model. The goal was to keep the retouching minimal to preserve the authentic feel of the session.

Lessons Learned
This shoot reinforced the importance of pre-planning and familiarity with the equipment. Knowing the capabilities of my Sony a1 and the 70-200mm lens allowed me to make quick adjustments and capture the best possible shots within the time constraints. Additionally, building a rapport with the model proved essential in making the most of our short time together.

Conclusion
The portfolio we created in just an hour at Verona Park marks the beginning of an exciting journey for an aspiring model. These images not only serve as her introduction to the industry but also as a testament to what can be accomplished with clear vision and collaboration.
